Is your hair feeling and looking lifeless? Or perhaps you could just do with a few pointers in the hair department, i’m here to help and here are my top 10 essential hair tips to ensure you are treating your mane right!
- At the risk of breaking out a hairdresser cliché … Have your hair cut every 6-8 weeks. Yes, truly! Every four months will not cut it (haha). It’s this simple: If you want healthy hair that grows, it must be maintained. And there’s nothing attractive about split ends.
- Take a little bit of time-out each week to pop on a deep-conditioning treatment (seek advice from your stylist on which is most suitable for you). You can give yourself the salon experience by wrapping your hair up in a hot towel (simply pour boiling water on a towel, allow to cool for a few minutes, then wring out the moisture). Kick back and let the steam infuse your hair with all that goodness.
- I might be biased, being a stylist and all, but product-wise use professional products only – that is, those available at salons. Again, speak to your stylist who can advise you and prescribe the most suitable products for your hair type. If you have your hair coloured at the salon, a colour-care shampoo and conditioner will go hand in hand with maintaining your salon look, and prolong the life of that colour.
- Comb wet hair, using a wide-tooth comb. Do not brush! As this will weaken it. On this note: if you find it a challenge to comb out the knots, work conditioner thoroughly through hair, rinse, and then try again. It is imperative you work through the conditioner well, otherwise the product is only rinsing through the surface and not conditioning all the hair. Allow for the extra 5 mins in the shower – you will notice the difference..
- Apply a leave-in conditioning treatment after every wash. Regardless of your hair type, there’s a product suitable for you that will keep your hair moisturised and manageable.
- Use a sunscreen in summer. The sun will dry out your hair, and fade your colour. A water-resistant UV defence mist or cream is ideal.
- After rinsing out your conditioner, turn off the hot tap and let cold water quickly run through your strands. This helps seal the cuticle, giving your hair a sleek, shiny finish.
- Do you heat-style your hair? Then you always need a thermal-protecting product to shield against any damage that can be caused from the strain of the heat on your hair. Speaking of heat-styling … to finish off a blow-dry, finish by switching on the cool-shot button and blast cold air downwards. AS with cold water, this will help close down the cuticle layer and prevent frizzies.
- Embrace what you have! Work with your hair, not against it. Being a stylist myself, I obviously love a statement hairstyle … In saying that, I’m also all about natural-looking hair. If you have naturally curly hair, don’t be afraid to scrap the straightener a few mornings here and there and embrace your roots! Just make sure to use a defining product.
- I’ve left the best for last … And, believe it or not, my most important tip is nothing to do with a product. It’s about what you put in your mouth. Yes, your diet! Your hair is really what you eat, so it’s another reason to fuel your body with all the best nutrients. In addition to an all-round nutritious diet, certain vitamins can help lifeless looking hair, such as fish oils, multi-vitamins, and flaxseed oils.
